Solaris 10 x86 free downloads reinstated
SUN ANNOUNCED that early-access versions of Solaris 10 x86 are now available for free download, once again. Now everyone can download early access versions of Solaris 10 x86, as part of what Sun now calls the "Software Express" program. Marketing folks call this "an entirely new concept" *cough* "...that offers high quality snapshots of Sun's future software products currently under development for our customers to download and use". They also add that "Express software is fully functional with completely predicatable and regular release schedules (monthly in most cases)". More: The Inquirer

Sun ashamed of Solaris x86 past
Sun Microsystems is struggling to correct a big mistake - its lack of support for Solaris x86. "One of the biggest mistakes we made a few years back was not supporting Solaris x86," Jonathan Schwartz, executive vice president at Sun, said in an interview. Sun confirms it's interested in AMD's Opteron
THE CEO of Sun has told an American newspaper that his firm is seriously interested in the AMD Opteron for machines it will sell. That confirms a report we wrote earlier this month, suggesting that Sun could be the first big tin vendor to market with an Opteron system. See Sun shines again on Opteron front. Sun Extends Solaris x86
Sun Microsystems Inc. on Thursday said it had added 100 new third-party systems and 100 new components to its Hardware Compatibility List for the Solaris x86 operating system Platform Edition. "Our goal is to ensure that the Solaris x86 OS is available on the widest range of x86 systems," said Ann Wettersten, a vice president in Sun's software systems group. Interest in the Solaris x86 operating system has grown significantly, she said, adding that in the past four months there have been more than 250,000 additional registered licenses of Solaris 9 x86 from such industries as finance, government, retail and telecom. Sun advances Solaris for Intel
Sun Microsystems has taken additional steps in its effort to increase the hardware support that's needed to make a version of its Solaris operating system for Intel processors useful. p The company began a promotion this week to encourage individuals to run tests that certify that Solaris works with hardware from different manufacturers.
