Sun supports Opteron workstation

Out of all the servers sitting in Sun Microsystems' Solaris x86 compatibility list one wee workstation stands out. It's a two processor system from Boxx Technologies, and it runs on Opterons.

p Sun's CEO Scott McNealy told The Reg that his company is serious about supporting Solaris x86 on Opteron, but he assured us that no Opteron-based hardware was in the works. Given the appearance of this Boxx system, however, we must ask, Scott, if you do indeed have an Opteron workstation lined up.

Sun continues to aggressively expand Solaris operating system x86

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: SUNW) today announced significantly expanded hardware support for the Solaris Operating System (OS) x86 Platform Edition. Sun's goal is to ensure that the Solaris OS x86 is available on the widest range of x86 systems by adding 100 new third-party systems and 100 new components to its Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) delivering more value, choice and flexibility to customers.

Sun gives Solaris x86 a nudge with new test suite

Over the past four months, 250,000 users have registered a copy of Solaris x86. This adds to millions of downloads in the last couple of years. Sun also boasts 1,000 applications for the OS, 100 new supported third-party systems and 100 new components - all HCTS certified.

For the longest time when we were delivering Solaris on Intel, people were saying to us, 'What are you doing that for? That's Microsoft's domain.' Well thank god we were doing that because the industry's really changed for us, and now we've got a full stack lined up. That allows us to go after some pretty interesting opportunities.
