Sun VP says Solaris-on-Intel question unresolved
With the release of Solaris 9 scheduled for midyear, Anil Gadre, vice president and general manager for Solaris software at Sun Microsystems Inc., has a lot on his plate. For one thing, he has to figure out how to deal with a vociferous user community that rebelled against Sun's decision, announced in January, to pull the plug on a version of Solaris 9 for Intel Corp. processors. Q: What's the status of your deliberations on whether to reverse your decision to kill Solaris 9 on Intel? A: We've had a substantial amount of input and interaction with various members of the community, and I'm really impressed by their passion and commitment to this space. More: Computer World

Sun rethinks Solaris on Intel
SUN MICROSYSTEMS THIS week revealed that user feedback has led the company to reconsider its decision to halt development of a version of the Solaris operating system for Intel's 32-bit chip architecture. Loyal Solaris fans were quick to reprimand Sun en masse for its announcement in January that the company would freeze the Solaris download program for Intel-based computers and not support Intel chips at all with its upcoming Solaris 9 os. Solaris on Laptops
People always look twice when they see the laptop. They ask, "You're running what?" We always have to say, "Yes, it is Solaris, the OS that runs on SPARC." More: Sun

Graham Lovell's progress status
Since my last status there have been interactions between the secret six and me on crafting proposals which are being considered by senior execs in Sun. While I cannot yet reveal the content of those proposals, they are targeted at greater community/customer involvement with the Solaris x86 product. Also, last week we held the Sun internal meeting to review the engineering processes by which we sustain the Solaris x86 product (necessary because of the common and platform specific code segments). While the work is not complete at this time (pending outcome of the above proposals) there is now an understanding of how we might begin to re-design our processes to fit with community engagements to our mutual benefit.
