Serverworks chipsets for Opteron in offing
AS WE REPORTED from CeBIT, Serverworks is creating chipsets for AMD's Opteron server chips. Now AMD Zone has filed a little more information about what's going on. The site claims that we'll see eight way Opteron chipsets, and in the future Sun may collaborate with Serverworks and make chipsets for 16- and 32-way systems. Serverworks was, for some time, the main source of server chipsets for chip giant Intel. More: The Inquirer

Sun Rolls Out Next Solaris 10 Beta, Tweaks Solaris 9
Sun tweaked the production-level Solaris 9 operating system with release 4/04, which brings support for more features in both the Intel Corp Xeon and Advanced Micro Devices Opteron processors. (Sun does not support the Itanium 2 line of 64-bit chips from Intel, although it has created a version of Solaris 9 for that chip.) Specifically, Solaris 9 now supports the SSE and SSE2 instruction extensions in the Xeon and Opteron processors; it also supports the HyperThreading simultaneous multithreading that Intel offers with the Xeons. "Sun is able to help customers ensure a consistent, secure and high quality migration to the x86 platform on AMD Opteron processor-based systems, or expansion and growth on the SPARC platform."
