Cross-platform packaging facility OpenPKG 2.5 available for Sun Solaris 8/9/10

The OpenPKG project released version 2.5 of their unique RPM-based cross-platform multi-instance Unix software packaging facility. OpenPKG 2.5 consists of 579 selected (from a pool of over 900) packages which include latest versions of all popular Unix server software. All software is carefully packaged for easy deployment on 19 different Unix platforms, including Sun Solaris 8/9/10 on both x86 and SPARC architectures. The major technical efforts for this release were spent on migrating to the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) version 4.0 and further improving the Solaris 10 support.

LSI Logic Collaborates with Sun Microsystems

LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI) announced today that it will port the MegaRAIDŽ line to Sun Microsystems' Solaris(TM) 10 Operating System (OS) for x64/x86. Once complete, LSI Logic and Sun customers will be able to cost-effectively manage, protect and share information, using MegaRAID systems and software with the Solaris 10 OS on X64/X86 processor-based systems. Supporting the Solaris 10 OS builds on LSI Logics goal to bring industry-leading I/O technologies to market, and to increase the RAID attach rate in the Solaris community.

"With over 2.6 million registered licenses and Sun's growth in the x64/x86 server space we are seeing unprecedented demand for Solaris 10, the most advanced OS on the planet," said Christopher Ratcliffe, Director of Solaris Marketing, Sun Microsystems, Inc. Sun's Linux killer shows promise

If Sun gets very serious about Solaris 10 on X-86 and the Open Solaris project that it hopes will nourish it, Linux vendors had better get very worried. That's because, in the many areas where Linux is miles ahead of Solaris, Sun stands a good chance of catching up quickly if it has the will, whereas in the many areas where Solaris is miles ahead, the Linux community will be hard pressed to narrow the gap. In this series of articles, we take a careful look at Solaris X-86, examining the good, the bad, and the ugly, with Linux as our chief point of reference.
